Community Forum to address migrant East African youth marginalisation

Investigative  and award winning journalist Steve Pennells was brave when he exposed the reality of our society’s  marginalisation and criminalisation of migrant youth especially those from East Africa in last  weekend’s West Australian.

Not surprising that his investigative  story attracted elite and radio shock jocks irritation this morning. Ravages of war, social marginalisation, imprisonment and unemployment have naturally taken toll on these new wave of East African young men.  The West Australian reports that community needs a re-think of the social breakdown and absence of self-responsibility in these damaged individuals . Imprisoning young refugees is a costly burden on the tax payer and it  will not rehabilitate the offender to re-integrate back into society, if any thing  imprisonment will produce a harden criminal with no trust or respect for anyone. These marginalised people who are our underclass need jobs,  security, less harassment and self respect to give them some human dignity so that they can change for the better.

A community forum is planned for 29 June at Mirrabooka Herb Graham Centre in Mirrabooka.
