1000 children still kept in detention

Chilout reports that in clear breach of international human rights law, at least 1000 young children are still being kept in detention in Australia’s asylum seekers gulags. The human rights advocacy organisation says locking innocent young children is the wrong message Australia is sending to the rest of the civilised world.

These kids arrived on our shores with their parents or family members seeking our protection but they are locked up out of sight out of mind. It is shocking that after various top level human rights enquiries at the federal level in the last decade, the plight of these children remains tragic under both major political parties. Yes, these kids look different being non-white and non- European and speak an alien language; or some just damn too young to even speak should never have been detained in a prison style camps called ‘detention centre’  like common criminals.

This form of  detention is  a punishment for seeking asylum  but proves  to be no deterrent at all. It does one thing very well, that is, prolonged detention produces a dehumanisation effect on the detainee, their children and confirms the orgy of the far right politics of this country. If any thing, locking up young kids is a clear breach under international human rights law of Conventions of Rights of the Child which  Australia is a signatory!

Interesting, locking up asylum seekers as punishment is  very popular amongst your average Australian. Stopping the boats is more important than freeing innocent children in detention. Clever country.
