Australian Football League (AFL) reported last month that star Muslim footy player Richmond Tiger’s Bachar Houli will offer his support to fellow Muslim footy player Ahmed Saad.
Ahmed Saad was found to have performance enhancing drugs in his system in a test carried out by an AFL drug testing program. This is a very challenging time for young Saad and it is good to see a fellow player of the Islamic faith extending his help to rehabilitate a future star.
Aussie rules is fast becoming the fastest growing sport in the Muslim communities of Victoria, Queensland and parts of New South Wales. It is threatening to replace soccer and is challenging traditional Australian rugby league. In Western Australia, soccer, cricket, boxing and swimming remains king in the Muslim communities but there are signs that like Victoria, Aussie rules is fast catching up. Eagles star Nic Naitanui’s ongoing support for immigrant and Muslim refugees in coaching Aussie rules is fast tracking many of the teenagers into juniors. One day many of these juniors will become our Aussie footy stars like Bachar Houli.
